Fall for Summer

Smoky Mountains

It may be the start of November but the weather here is confused. Is it fall or summer? The temperature during the day remains warm in the upper 70’s, but the mornings and evenings are cool. The leaves are slightly changing colors but it’s more like the leaves are half changed (or brown) and quickly fall from the trees. Last year at this time it was chilly and the leaves were past peak, what a different a year makes!

Grotto Falls in the Smokies

We visited the Great Smoky Mountains mid-October, when peak was predicted but it was a slow fall in the mountains too. Not slow with people though! It’s the busiest national park in the country and we can verify that. It was jammed packed with couples, trying to enjoy the fall colors or families, in town being swept up by the restaurants, shopping, mini-golf, museums, and other attractions. It was foggy and rainy for most of our trip but we still got out and hit the trails early and often, enjoying the feel of the cool mountain air after 6 months of intense heat and being home bound.

Lake days

It was H-O-T this summer so we didn’t get out much. We tired hiking twice and stopped shortly after getting started as it was just too hot, even at 6:00 AM. But we do live on a lake so we took advantage of the water life with boating or getting out on a waverunner.

Now, with the cooler weather in the morning, we’ll get up early and go the trails and we have visited some pretty places. Dismal Canyon, Mousetail State Park, David Crockett State Park, Chalk Mine Hollow, Bankhead National Forest, and Natchez Trail Parkway.

David Crochet State Park

The end of July marked our 8th year on the road. We have been to 1 new state and have had the chance to really explore 2 others. Only 4 more states to go! The highlight of this past year was the fall colors in Minnesota (and seeing our dear friends in Duluth), seeing family in November and family visiting us in June, and getting out on the boat for the Supermoon.

We are enjoying the little house we are living in and we forgot how great it is to have a personal washer and dryer. We are looking forward to the cooler weather and seeing family in the next few months. Happy Trails!

  1. Jennifer, can’t believe it’s 8 years already you’ve been on the road! Yes, the Smokies are just beautiful! Thanks for the update, and just beautiful photography! Godspeed as you travel and see family for the holidays!

    Blessings, Roberta

      1. Yes, still doing limited private practice counseling, and looking forward to our family all being together for Thanksgiving and Christmas; one daughter and family coming from WI, and our other daughter and family coming from TN. Hope you’ll get to be together with yours, also, and that everyone is doing well.
